But most respondents to the Reuters / Ipsos poll favor allowing migrants to get the green card by sponsoring US recruitment companies.
The poll, published on Thursday, said 25 percent favored allowing immigrants to get permanent residence through the lottery system, while 60 percent opposed it.
The Green Card lottery system, also called Visa Diversity, aims to diversify immigrants into the United States by offering 50,000 immigration visas each year to citizens of countries that do not send many people to the United States.
President Donald Trump urged Congress to cancel the visa diversification package, which has been criticized for being circumvented and potentially a threat to national security.
Seventy percent of respondents supported allowing foreigners and foreign women married to Americans and Americans to get permanent residence.
Sixty-one percent of Americans favor allowing immigrants to get a green card by working for US companies and institutions.
The survey was conducted online in English across the United States and included 1,278 adults and adults with a credit margin of three percentage points.
