"Super Mario" turns into a movie star

The Japanese video game company Nintendo has said it will cooperate with American entertainment company Animation to create an animation film using characters from its famous game Super Mario.

Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimeshima said during a meeting with analysts that Universal Pictures would be distributing the film.

It is not yet clear when the new film will be released.

The film is part of the Japanese company's efforts to diversify revenue streams as its profits are heavily dependent on video game consoles.

The company said it posted the highest operating profit for the third quarter in eight years, supported by a strong demand for the new video game Switch. It said it expected annual profits higher than previously expected.
