Donald Trump and his wife Melania congratulate Muslims on Ramadan

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania congratulated the Muslims on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

The president said in a statement published by the White House that he sends his greetings and best wishes to Muslims in the United States and the world on this occasion.

"Those who celebrate Ramadan can strengthen our societies, help those in need and give good examples of how to live a holy life," he said.

Ramadan "reminds us of the richness that Muslims add to the religious fabric of American life," the statement said.

"All of us in the United States have blessed that we live under a constitution that promotes religious freedom and respects religious practice," he said. "Our constitution guarantees Muslims the possibility of celebrating the month of Ramadan in accordance with the dictates of conscience and unhindered by the government."

"The Constitution also provides diverse opportunities for all Americans to deepen their understanding of the human spirit," the statement said.

He wrote at the end of the statement that he and the Germans wished "a blessed month". He said: "Ramadan Mubarak."

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo offered similar congratulations and expressed his best wishes to Muslims around the world on this occasion.

"Every year, many US embassies and consulates organize activities to celebrate the occasion, bringing together Muslims and other faiths who are committed to our common goal of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity," he said in a statement.

"These talks and cooperation are one of the core strengths of our diplomacy, pave the way for stronger societies through partnerships and respect for diversity," said Pompeo's statement.
